100 Years of Service: The Urban League of Hampton Roads

Martin Luther King Jr. “I may not get there with you but we as a people shell get to the promise land”, these are famous words by the late MLK Jr. On January 18, 2010, 7:30 a.m. at the Ted Constant Center, located 4320 Hampton Boulevard Norfolk, VA.

The Hampton Roads Urban League will host this annual celebration to honor this great civil rights icon.

The annual program honors the legacy of King and recognizes local leaders who are fulfilling his dream through their contributions in the areas of community service, workforce development, education and health. During the program, the 2010 Martin Luther King Jr. Award will be presented to:

• Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ Candid Conversations About Race Team, for its efforts to close the racial achievement gap among African American males;

• George Crawley, for his service on numerous community boards and committees and his leadership as president of the Hampton Roads Committee of 200+ Men;

• Pastor Raymond Johnson, for his commitment to the numerous programs to benefit youth, families and the homeless in the city of Newport News; and

• Kenneth Newman, for his many years of devotion as a Metro Machine Corp. representative and community advocate in promoting educational programs for Norfolk Public Schools.

Since it was established in 1984, the MLK Community Leaders’ Breakfast has grown in size; more than 600 people attended the 2009 event. Tickets are $30 per person and sponsored tables are available with contributions of $500 to $2,000.

To become a sponsor, purchase tickets or obtain additional information, call the Urban League office at 627-0864.
